Kissimmee, Fla.-The fifth-ranked softball team opened the 2006 with by defeating the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 8-3 at the Rebel Games. Sophomore outfielder Amanda Kowalsick (Riverhead/Jamesport) went three-for-three with two RBI's.
Ithaca fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but answered with four runs in the second inning and four more in the fifth to secure the win.
Seniors Leigh Bonkowski (The Williams School/Mystic, Conn.) and Amanda Illinger (Norwich Free Academy/Hanover, Conn.) and sophomore Stacy Pelesz (Hudson/Livingston) each had an RBI for the Bombers. Sophomore pitcher Nicole Cade (Beaverton/Portland Oregon) earned the win in the first game. She struck out nine batters and allowed three hits in a complete game.
The Bombers will next play Bethany at 4:10 p.m.
